Originally the historic Clinton Chapel, which was constructed in 1838, and served as a church and as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1862, when Columbus was just a village, James Taylor and Wesley O'Harrah opened a funeral business on the southeast corner of State and Third Streets, where the Old Old Columbus Post Offices were built. The building still stands today, and was restored into law offices in the mid 1900's. In 1865, Taylor and O'Harrah were in charge of the local funeral arrangements for President Abraham Lincoln. In 1829, Philip Schoedinger emigrated to the U.S. from Dörrenbach, Germany. Philip was a craftsman by trade and in 1855 he opened a casket-making department. In 1865, Philip established the Schoedinger & Brown on West State Street in Columbus. Philip's sons, George J. and J. Albert soon joined the family business.
